To this date (1/14/2013) I still get inquiries on the website from people who want to buy Metrogrips.  I hope to re-launch Metrogrip again in the near future.

I modeled for David’s Bridal for their prom dresses catalog, this was around 2006 or 2007.  I was 26 or 27 years old but they sure managed to make me look 14.  lol

Here’s what I’ve learned thus far from being without running water for 80+ hours in natural-disaster-less year-2012 Brooklyn, and I write “thus far” since as of this writing, we are still “roughing it”, which is sort of the point of this blog.

Waterless “Lesson” List… ahurr

1 – Wasteful Western Water Ways.  We really do use A LOT of water (wastefully) to flush the damn toilet; approximately 2.5 gallons.  Now, Duane Reade charged us $4 for 3 gallons of Poland Springs (and that was a “sale”) – so you’re looking at about $3.50 a flush, man.  We should really be using water-efficient toilets in the United States; you know, two flushers – small flush, ahem, BIG flush.

2 – You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone!  Setting aside the obvious commode & shower facilities, there are many other little things we take for granted; such as a faucet to brush your teeth, water for dishes or to wash your damn hands, or being able to fill a kettle.  Though this leads into lesson #3…

3 – STORE BOTTLED WATER IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES!!!!

4 – Improv.  It’s pretty damn possible to improvise, you know, “camp tricks” like lighting incense in the bathroom.  (just kidding! Though, we DID do that, too)  One of the few found “luxuries” of this New York City-living mis-circumstance that I discovered are hot towels, hell yeah.  Heat up some (of your stored, bottled…) water and dunk a washcloth or paper towel to wash your face (or whatever else) and there you have it – a good ol’ fashioned “sponge bath”.

5-  Conservation.  We really could stand to conserve more water.  For example; It really doesn’t require running the faucet to brush your teeth, nor to rinse your mouth, or clean the toothbrush.  I’ve gotten by just fine with a sports bottle.  (improv!)

6 – Like guiding a ship by the stars… I can tell how long it’s been since I’ve showered by how long my armpit hair is.  TMI, sorry.  Actually, I’m lying.  I already knew that.  ;P

7 – Great Innovations of the Human race:  Baby wipes are Awesome!!
(spraying your hands with Fantastic, not so much.)

8 – Hey, not for nothing… I really don’t smell that bad.  Really!  Oh right, as Sarah Silverman would say “of course you don’t smell anything, sweetie… you can’t smell yourself!”

9 – Finally, the ninth & most important landlocked lesson I’ve learned (since I started this without an actual number in mind and I don’t really give a rats…) and I guess the true “moral” of the story is this; Perspective.

There are literally millions of people who don’t have clean water to DRINK, much less a tankful to flush their excrement, so we could all do with some waterless days to appreciate what we’ve got and stop sweatin’ (cuz you’ll stink faster!) the small stuff.
